Operating Principle

Transport and Infrastructure Solutions by Kathmandu Podway utilize advanced technology for constructing next-generation pre-stressed transport overpasses, with the string rail as the core component. This string rail consists of a steel or composite beam housing a core bundle of pre-stressed tensioned wires (strings) and is fitted with a rail head. Passenger and cargo electric vehicles on steel wheels—known as uPods—operate automatically along this rail at speeds up to 150 km/h, with potential future speeds reaching 500 km/h.

The horizontal load on the overpass—approximately one thousand tons, which is two orders of magnitude lower than that of suspension bridges—is absorbed by anchoring structures positioned up to 10 kilometers apart. The supporting towers bear minimal vertical loads, allowing for a more lightweight design and reducing the need for frequent installation, unlike traditional elevated roads, railways, or monorail systems. This engineering approach enables the construction of unsupported spans of up to 3 kilometers, making it particularly advantageous for traversing water bodies, deep gorges, densely built-up areas, or corridors with existing energy and transportation infrastructure.
