Kathmandu Valley has long struggled with traffic congestion, pollution, and unreliable public transportation. But now, a revolutionary idea is taking shape — Kathmandu Podway, a cutting-edge urban cable car system designed to offer sustainable, efficient, and futuristic public transport.
Podway is a ropeway-based personal rapid transit (PRT) system where small autonomous pods run on elevated cables, transporting passengers across the city. Unlike traditional buses or trains, these pods move continuously and independently, offering non-stop, point-to-point service.
🚦 Traffic Relief: Kathmandu is notorious for its chaotic traffic. Podway will reduce road congestion by offering an alternative aerial route.
🌱 Eco-Friendly: Powered by electricity, it produces zero emissions—perfect for Nepal’s clean energy goals.
🕐 Time-Saving: No waiting in long queues or traffic jams; the Podway provides swift, direct connections.
♿ Inclusive: Designed with universal access in mind, suitable for elderly, disabled, and all passengers.
The project aims to build 130 km of podway lines across key parts of the Kathmandu Valley, connecting places like Ratnapark, Kalanki, Koteshwor, Baneshwor, and Boudha. Once completed, the Podway could transform how Nepalis move, work, and live.
Implementing such a system isn’t without hurdles — land acquisition, technical feasibility, and public acceptance are key issues. But with strong vision and collaboration, Kathmandu could become South Asia’s first Podway city.
