Kathmandu Podway Pilot Line Set to Begin Construction in 2026

Kathmandu, Nepal — The much-anticipated Kathmandu Podway project has taken a major step forward with the government greenlighting the first pilot route. Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2026.

According to the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, the initial line will connect Ratnapark to Kalanki, a high-traffic corridor. The Podway will feature automated electric cable cars designed for up to 8 passengers each, operating every 30 seconds.

“This is a transformative step for Nepal’s public transport,” said project engineer Dipesh Shrestha. “We are adopting proven technologies with local adaptations.”

Public consultations and environmental impact assessments are ongoing. If successful, the pilot will pave the way for 130 km of network coverage across Kathmandu Valley.
